Overview of Refractory Materials

Refractory materials are inorganic non-metallic materials that can maintain stable performance under high-temperature conditions. They are typically used in high-temperature industrial equipment and structures to protect them from high temperatures, chemical corrosion, and thermal stress. These materials are made from natural ores (such as refractory clay, silica high-alumina bauxite, magnesite, zircon sand, dolomite, graphite, etc.), certain industrial raw materials (such as industrial alumina, zirconia, etc.) and synthetic materials (such as silicon carbide, synthetic mullite, synthetic andalusite, synthetic spinel, etc.).

Main Characteristics of Refractory Materials

1.High Melting Point:

Refractory materials typically have extremely high melting points allowing them to remain stable in high-temperature environments For example, the melting point of ordinary refractory bricks is around 1700°C, while some specialty refractory materials can have melting points exceeding 2000°C.

2. High Thermal Stability:

Refractory materials are resistant to thermal expansion, contraction, or other deformation at high temperatures, allowing them to withstand high-temperature environments for extended periods without compromising their structure.

3. High Strength:

Refractory materials maintain a high mechanical strength even under high-temperature conditions making them resistant to damage from mechanical impacts and loads.

4. Resistance to Chemical Erosion:

Refractory materials exhibit good corrosion resistance to acidic alkaline, and neutral slags, gases, and liquid metals, making them less susceptible to erosion by chemical substances in high- temperature environments.

5. Good Thermal Conductivity and Insulation:

Depending on the specific application requirements, refractory materials can possess excellent thermal conductivity or insulation properties to meet the thermal management needs of various industrial processes.

Application of Refractory Materials

The downstream of the refractory materials industry chain mainly involves sectors such as steel, building materials (cement, glass, ceramics, etc.), non-ferrous metals chemicals, power, environmental protection, and military applications. According to the demand structure for refractory materials in China, the downstream applications are predominantly in the steel industry, accounting for approximately 70%. This is followed by the cement and ceramics industries, which account for 7% and 6% respectively. The glass and chemical sectors account for less than 5%.

Deep Processing of Refractory Materials Grinding

As a provider of comprehensive grinding equipment solutions, Liming Heavy Industry offers solid technical and grinding equipment support for the refractory materials industry.

Processing Workflow of Refractory Materials

The refractory raw materials, after classification and batching, are sent to Liming Heavy Industry's grinding equipment for dry grinding. They then enter a homogenization silo for uniform mixing. Finally, water or binders are added for stirring, and the materials are shaped using either hydraulic pressing or rolling ball methods. The dry process is relatively simple, resulting in a low moisture content after shaping. Compared to natural raw materials, this process features stable mineral phases, uniform composition, and consistent density, achieving the transformation from raw materials to high-performance refractory powders.
