South Africa Solid waste Recycling Solution: LM Vertical Roller Mill Realizes Efficient Conversion of Blast Furnace Slag into S95 Grade Slag Powder
Developed for metallurgical solid waste, Liming Heavy Industry’s LM series Vertical Slag Mill is highly adapted to South Africa’s metallurgical slag processing scenarios. It delivers one-stop solutions covering the full workflow of slag drying, grinding, powder selection and dust removal.
Blast ffurnace slag is a major type of industrial solid waste generated during steel smelting, with huge annual output in South Africa’s iron and steel and metallurgical sectors. Long term open air stockpiling of slag not only occupies land resources and causes dust pollution, but also conflicts with South Africa’s stringent environmental regulations and policies for industrial green transformation in recent years. Realizing waste reduction, resource recovery and high-value utilization of slag has become a core demand for South African metallurgical and building material enterprises to cut costs and improve efficiency.

Granulated blast furnace slag features excellent potential hydraulic activity. After professional grinding activation, it can produce high-strength cementitious components. Processed into S95 grade slag powder, it serves as a high quality mineral admixture, widely used in cement blending, ready mixed concrete, infrastructure projects, precast building materials and other fields. It acts as a premium alternative raw material for South Africa’s infrastructure and green building material industries.
In response to local South-African conditions including highly fluctuating moisture content of slag feedstock, abundant impurities in raw materials and complex plant site working conditions, Liming Heavy Industry has developed a mature slag grinding process tailored for the South African market. It enables a complete resource recovery chain that reliably turns waste slag into high quality fine powder.

The whole process features a high degree of automation and easy to operate maintenance, which is well-suited for continuous production at local South African plants. After slag raw materials arrive at the site, they go through unloading, conveying, iron removal and air-lock feeding systems before being stably fed into the LM Vertical Slag Mill. The equipment completes three procedures simultaneously: grinding, hot-air drying and fine powder separation. Qualified fine powder is collected by dust removal equipment and conveyed into silos through closed pipelines. Operating under negative pressure throughout the whole workflow, the system achieves dust ffree production with zero pollution and complies with environmental protection standards for South-African factories.
Core operating indicators of the process are stable and controllable. The specific surface area of finished products is stably maintained at 420 m²/kg, fully meeting the specifications for S95 grade slag powder with high hydraulic activity and consistent quality. The mill can directly process wet slag with moisture content below 15 % and deliver finished products with moisture ≤1 %. It can cope with raw material fluctuations caused by South Africa’s rainy and humid climate, ensuring year round stable operation of the production line.

LM Vertical Slag Mill adopts fully negative pressure sealed operation and is equipped with a pulse dust removal system to prevent dust leakage at the source, complying with South Africa’s stringent environmental emission requirements. Featuring low energy consumption, long service life of wear parts and low failure rate, the equipment greatly mitigates operational challenges caused by remote plant locations, insufficient on site maintenance staff and long spare part supply lead times in South Africa. It is highly suitable for large scale, regular solid waste processing projects across local South African sites.

S95 grade slag powder activated and produced by LM Vertical Slag Mill features uniform particles and stable activity. When blended into concrete, it comprehensively improves engineering quality and is applicable to various infrastructure projects in South Africa, including roads, bridges, building construction and ports.
1. Optimized construction performance: With low water demand, slag powder effectively reduces the water binder ratio of concrete and mitigates bleeding and segregation. It greatly improves concrete flowability, workability and pumpability, adapting to diverse on site construction conditions across South Africa.
2. Reduced heat of hydration and crack prevention: As an equal volume replacement for cement, it significantly cuts the hydration heat release of concrete. It prevents cracks caused by excessive temperature difference in mass volume infrastructure works and enhances the stability of engineering quality.
3. Improved concrete strength: Reasonable particle gradation increases concrete compactness, which effectively boosts the later age strength of concrete without adjusting mix proportions.
4. Enhanced durability and corrosion resistance: It effectively restrains alkali aggregate reaction and improves concrete resistance to sulfate and seawater erosion, making it ideal for engineering projects in South Africa’s coastal and highly corrosive environments.
Liming Heavy Industry provides EPC general contracting services for complete slag powder production lines, covering the full workflow including process design, complete set equipment supply, installation and commissioning, operation & maintenance after commissioning, and after-sales technical support. Tailored to the features of overseas projects in South Africa, we deliver customized solutions, remote technical guidance and local based spare part support to address pain points such as difficult on-site construction, challenging operation maintenance and slow after sales response for overseas projects.
